Arne Slot Insists He Feels Safe and Retains Liverpool's Support Following PSV Loss
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it's expected for doubts to be asked about his future following another heavy loss against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their 9th loss in 12 games, representing the club's poorest streak since being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie title holders on a difficult evening at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I'm fine, I have got significant backing from above,” the coach stated.
“It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory naturally but if you are coaching a team and struggling then it is normal that doubts arise.”
He added, “I'm comfortable with my role. It is not the initial instance I've found myself in a tough spot but it is about time that we changed our fortunes.”
Conversations with Club Management
Upon being questioned to provide details on his conversations with the team officials, the head coach revealed:
“We talk a lot. They are supportive to the team and to me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me constantly each day to say they have faith in me.”
He further stated, “Through standard discussions I feel the belief. But I've not talked to them since this match so far so let’s see.”
Familiar Failings and Squad Response
Slot lamented familiar weaknesses from his Liverpool side in their European loss, specifically poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more forthright in his evaluation of the club’s predicament.
“I haven't got the answers. Honestly, I do not. I’m saying that to all,” the midfielder remarked.
“It's simply not good enough. I don't need to wait to think about it. I'm beyond getting mad inside. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the words.”
He added, “It's tough because I’m playing for the club I love. I support them, and I’ve seen Liverpool since I was young.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side enduring a phase of this nature with results this poor.”
He stated, “But we continue to wear that badge on our shirts. And until it is taken away, we’re always going to battle.”
“We will attempt to bring this squad return to the top, demonstrate to all again what Liverpool stands for and the reason it's called the best team in the world.”
“However currently, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
