At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
