The US President and President Gustavo Petro have turned up the volume of their war of words, heightening strains between the two countries after US forces attacked Venezuela to remove the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from office.
"He has cocaine mills and processing labs and his time is running out," the US president stated.
Escalating Threats and Claims
Speaking to the press on Sunday, Trump suggested similar armed intervention against Bogotá, claiming Colombia faces serious problems and led by an unwell individual who enjoys creating narcotics and distributing it to the United States."
While Colombia remains the globe's biggest source of the narcotic, there is no evidence linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way involved in the business.
A Deteriorating Partnership
The country for decades served as a staunch collaborator of the US in the struggle against narcotics trade and benefited from wide political approval in the US capital, but relations have worsened significantly since Trump assumed the presidency.
The nation's drug trade is mainly overseen by guerrilla factions such as one major cartel, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a large contingent of whom demobilised after a historic peace agreement.
Colombia's Strong Rebuttal
Upon being questioned whether military intervention like that in Venezuela was being considered regarding Colombia, Trump said: "I like the sound of that from my perspective."
President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who disarmed in the 1990s, firmly denied these allegations. "I am neither an illegitimate leader nor am I a narco," he affirmed.
"Trump speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he expressed online.
"If they [the US] bomb civilians, they will transform into a multitude of fighters across the countryside. If they capture me, which a large part of Colombians admires and supports, they will release the fierce spirit of the nation," he admonished.
From Insurgent to Statesman
He passed part of his youth belonging with the radical M-19 insurgent movement though it is believed that he never participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he was involved in creating a new constitution in the early 90s and eventually served as a respected lawmaker. He served as mayor of the Colombian capital prior to his election the nation's highest office.
"I swore to abstain from using a weapon again ... but in defense of my country I will take up the fight," he vowed.
Reinforced Protection along with Widespread Condemnation
The Colombian defence minister reported that Petro's personal security had been reinforced.
Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have expressed support with the US president, yet figures from all sides of the ideological divide have rejected the notion of an invasion targeting Colombia.
Bilateral and Economic Strains
The US withdrew his travel authorization subsequent to he encouraged US troops to ignore unlawful commands. Later, in October, it placed asset freezes on Petro, his wife and various associates.
Simultaneously the US was building up its forces near Venezuela and striking vessels thought to carry drugs to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted operations against vessels in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
